  Crop protection and disease controlWe have been providing specialised technical assistance to assist Belize’s banana industry to better control diseases such as Black Sigatoka. This will help the farmers to increase their per-acre production and decrease their costs of production - which in turn will ensure long term viability of the industry.The expert has been helping to develop a new disease management and monitoring strategy for the banana industry as part of the overall programme to aid Belize in reaching a new level of competitiveness. The comprehensive disease management strategy for the banana industry will improve farm practices while reducing the number of cycles of chemical application for disease management. The mission has three phases: i) a diagnosis of the current pest and disease management strategy and practice, ii) development of an improved comprehensive and integrated strategy to be tested with field trails, iii) demonstration and dissemination of improved disease management techniques to win support for the new disease monitoring and management strategy. |
